Joss Whedon Returns to Marvel for a Special CAPTAIN AMERICA Comic

Although last year’s Avengers: Age of Ultron was almost certainly writer/director Joss Whedon’s last foray into the Marvel Cinematic Universe, it turns out it’s not his last work for Marvel Comics. It’s just been announced that Joss Whedon is teaming up with his former Astonishing X-Men creative partner, artist John Cassaday, for a special one-off story celebrating 75 years of Captain America.

The story will appear in Captain America: Sam Wilson #7, in which Whedon and Cassaday will tell an all-new tale that is intended to celebrate the legacy and legend of the Sentinel of Liberty. The issue will also feature a main story from series creative team Nick Spencer and Daniel Acuna, and another backup by Greg Rucka and Mike Perkins.

Joss Whedon famously grew up a Marvel fanboy, long before his work creating shows like Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel and Firefly. It was 2004, right after all of those TV series had ended, when Whedon and Cassaday started their collaboration together: a 25-issue run on Astonishing X-Men. Today, many fans celebrate that run as one of the very best X-Men comic book runs of all time, right up there with Chris Claremont and John Byrne. It was that run on X-Men that really got Whedon on Marvel’s radar, and ultimately landed him the job writing and directing The Avengers.

Cassaday is no stranger to Cap either, having drawn an issue of Fallen Son: The Death Of Captain America and a Captain America series with John Ney Riber back in 2002. Although his time with the character has been brief, Cassaday is considered one of the best Cap artists of the modern era.

Captain America: Sam Wilson #7 is set to hit comic shops everywhere on March 30.

What do you think of Whedon’s return to Marvel? Are you excited, or would you rather have him work on his creator owned stuff again? Let us know in the comments below.
