Does the New IT Movie Live Up to the Hype?

IT finally floated to theaters this weekend, and early word is it delivers the goods–especially the scares. But do our experts think it lives up the hype? And will other films like the Deadpool spin-off X-Force, Thor: Ragnarok, and Justice League do the same? That’s what we tried to answer on today’s Nerdist News Talks Back.

Host Jessica Chobot was joined today by our editor-in-chief Rachel Heine, senior editor Dan Casey, and producer Jason Nguyen. After a little clowning around, Dan and Rachel gave their spoiler-free feedback on the movie and whether you should see it too. But is the excitement for the film riding the Strangers Things wave, or vice versa? And does IT and movies like The Conjuring mark a return to big budget “prestige” Hollywood horror flicks, the kind that have gone away the last decade? If so, should more of them feature clowns, or are clowns really not all that scary? (Hmm, that one might call for a real-life test.)

The panel then moved the **** on to reports that Fox has tapped Drew Goddard to lead their Deadpool spin-off X-Force. Goddard directed The Cabin in the Woods, and his many writing credits include Cloverfield, The Martian, and Daredevil (the series, not the terrible movie), so is he the right ****ing person for the job? And will a Deadpool-ier take on the X-Men universe be better than the current X-Men films? Either way, what characters should make the crossover? Nightcrawler? Jubilee? Maybe deal in Gambit?

Finally, they took a look at the latest fantastic peek we got at Thor: Ragnarok, featuring Thor’s attempt at a team name for his new group. Is “The Revengers” the best we can come up with? Even if it’s not, is there any way the movie can live up to the crazy expectations we have for it? And will that excitement be enough to help lead it to a box office win over Justice League this November?

Remember, if you ever want to be a part of our very own Losers Club, tune in live to Nerdist News Talks Back weekdays at 1:00p.m. PST on Nerdist’s YouTube and Alpha channels. IT’s the place to be.
