Is POWER RANGERS Villain Rita Repulsa’s Staff Deadlier Than Her Monsters?

If you watched Power Rangers as a kid, you probably always believed that the biggest threats on the show were the literal monsters of the week that the teens teed off against over and over again. Watching it now, there is a case to be made that the most dangerous thing central villain Rita Repulsa ever did wasn’t creating giant eyeballs or hungry pig creatures. It was throwing her staff from the Moon to Earth.

In my latest Because Science, I’m taking a question directly from you viewers. If Rita Repulsa really threw her staff from the Moon to Earth, wouldn’t it have to have been traveling at such tremendous speed to have caused a whole lot of damage when it impacted the ground? The idea isn’t as farfetched as you may think–for decades, militaries around the world have considered dropping metal rods from orbit as potential weapons of mass destruction. One even had a name: Project Thor.

So, could Rita Repulsa’s staff be a form of kinetic bombardment, something arguably much more dangerous than any giant monster? You’ll have to watch my latest episode above to find out!
