Is a DUNGEONS & DRAGONS Cinematic Universe On The Way?

The OG pen-and-paper RPG is ready another shot at big screen glory, and thanks to an interview with producer Roy Lee, we’ve got loads of plot details from the big-budget Dungeons & Dragons movie currently in the works at Warner Bros.

“This new Dungeons & Dragons will be a Guardians of the Galaxy-tone movie in a Tolkien-like universe,” Lee told Collider. That has us more than a little excited–a playful romp through the realm, rather than a serious war drama, will best represent the goofy D&D sessions we’ve experienced throughout the years (and regularly watch on Geek & Sundry’s Critical Role).

A script is already in the can from David Leslie Johnson, the scribe who penned the underrated 2009 psychological horror film Orphan and is currently working on a new version of the Aquaman solo flick for director Zack Snyder. The story will reportedly dive deep into the game’s lore, is set exclusively in the realm, and features an ensemble cast, naturally. They’ve even confirmed that The Yawning Portal from Forgotten Realms makes an appearance in the script! But the most exciting revelation is the possibility of Warner Bros. and Roy Lee creating an extended D&D cinematic universe, meaning this zany Guardians-esque flick would be just the tip of the iceberg for movies set in the realm. How many critical rolls will it take to make sure this film gets the greenlight?

Join Jessica Chobot as we discuss all of the details from the interview and the reasons why we think a Dungeons & Dragons cinematic universe would be oh-so-successful, in this Nerdist News Special Report. Then take a peek at our favorite Dungeons & Dragons modules of all time and let us know what setting you’d most like to see in a D&D movie!
