Inside INSIDE OUT: A New Video Reveals the Inspiration of the Pixar Wonder

Pixar and Disney have a knack for making beautiful films that use fantastical premises to tell stories about ideas as universal as friendship, love, bravery and more. It’s no surprise how beloved these pictures are since they manage to bridge the gap between childhood and adulthood, perhaps to a degree that no other studio or filmmaking team today can manage. This has never been so true as it is with Pixar’s 2015 film Inside Out.

YouTube’s Nerdwriter delves deep into the ideas posited by the Pixar film in his latest video, Inside Out: Emotional Theory Comes Alive. The video illustrates the history of the Pixar movie, pointing to a 1940s propaganda short about reason and emotion during WWII as the fledgling idea for Inside Out, and attributing the film’s five emotions to on the the model proposed by psychologist Paul Ekman.

While other Pixar films have included teachable moments aplenty and characters that stand as analogs to our friends, families, and selves, Inside Out goes a more literal route by showing us how emotions impact our lives. Even if emotions are vastly more complicated than depicted in the movie, and perhaps, Inside Out offers a step in the right direction as a model for kids to deal with their feelings. Nerdwriter reinforces what we all left the theater thinking:

“If the result is that children learn earlier and better why it’s important to accept and expect sadness then I think it’s unquestionably a good thing.”
