Help Fund Andrew Bowser’s New Clive Barker-Inspired Horror Short HOUSE MOTHER

If you’re a loyal fan of Nerdist, you probably know Andrew Bowser. Perhaps you know him from his podcast that he co-hosts with Jessica Chobot called Bizarre States. Or maybe you recognize his name for all the fun, narrative content he’s been directing for the site like the shorts Lady Killers, Friends: Rebooted, Blank Page (A ‘Game of Thrones’ Parody), and our Suicide Squad parody trailer. Then again, you might also know his alter ego Onyx, the Fortuitous slayer of the bright realm (a.k.a. That Satanist Guy from Reddit).

In any case, however you know Andrew Bowser, you should also know that he is a huge horror fan and has directed three feature films. Now, he is looking to raise funds to bring his latest short film House Mother which gives multiple reasons for horror fans to get excited.

House Mother is the story of Sarah Chalmers, a young woman who was raised in a conservative religious community and has now left that small town to attend college at a big university. She rushes Phi Kappa Phi where, legend has it, over 100 years ago when the sorority was founded, an evil, evil woman named Demetria Clemm served as House Mother over the sisters. Eventually Demetria’s strict rules and abuse became too much to bear so the girls banded together and killed their ruling House Mother. Now, the worse the girls are, the stronger Demetria gets, and if you recite a certain passage while looking into a mirror – House Mother will appear to judge you for your wicked ways.

As Bowser describes it, “House Mother harkens back to both Clive Barker’s gothic body horror classics like Hellraiser and Nightbreed, and Stuart Gordon’s absurdist Lovecraftian masterpieces Re-Animator and From Beyond. ” And, get this: House Mother features an all female cast! As the writer/ director explains in his video, “In this movie, women are the heroes and women are the villains and women are everything that’s in between.” House Mother looks to deconstruct the ideas about what women are “allowed” to be in horror, and to that we say, Hell yeah!

The money raised from this crowdfunding campaign will go towards a practical creature design by Terminator 2 and Edward Scissorhands makeup artists Bruce Spaulding Fuller and Andy “Monster Pappa” Bergholtz, an original score by the band Nightcrawler, and poster design by Christopher Lovell, best known for his awesome Fright Rags t-shirt designs.

The rewards for contributing are awesome, too: from a personalized voicemail or call from Onyx and a digital download of the score to a special edition VHS copy complete with VHS box art or an engraved VCR. So what are you waiting for, horror fans? Is this the type of movie we’re always begging to see? If so, put your money where your mouth is and contribute to the House Mother campaign. If you want the next great supernatural baddie Demetria Clemm to haunt your nightmares in a short — and eventually a feature — film form, kick in some cash to their Indiegogo campaign now!
