Report: Gugu Mbatha-Raw Cast in STAR WARS: EPISODE VIII

Another day, another Star Wars rumor! Last week we reported that the short list for the female lead in Episode VIII included Tatiana Maslany (Orphan Black), Gina Rodriguez (Jane the Virgin), and Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Belle) and that this list might be up for not one but two possible female lead roles. Though Disney has not announced anything officially yet, Collider is exclusively reporting that Gugu Mbatha-Raw has nabbed the lead role in the Rian Johnson-led sequel from a galaxy far, far away. If this is true, she joins Benicio del Toro as the only other confirmed cast member to the Force Awakens sequel.

Again, the rumor last week stated that there were two female leads in Episode VIII and that all three women were up for both parts. And while we have to admit that we are still rooting for a Tatiana Maslany-led Star Wars flick, she is reportedly in talks to join Jake Gyllenhaal in Stronger, the drama about the Boston Marathon bombing. That being said, we would also love to see any of these three actresses in the film. The Star Wars franchise has certainly struggled with diversity in its casting over the years, and it would be awesome to see not one, but two more talented, badass women join the likes of Carrie Fisher, Natalie Portman, Daisey Ridley, Lupita Nyong’o, and Gwendolyn Christie.

I mean, hey — what if one of them is the big bad to Benicio del Toro’s flunky? How amazing would that be? We want lady heroes AND villains, Star Wars, ok? Look at how much people already love Captain Phasma. GIVE THE PEOPLE WHAT THEY WANT!
