GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY Gets a Manga Series in Japan

Up until the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie, very few non-comic book fans could have identified Marvel’s cosmic superheroes. After the film hit in 2014, these interstellar misfits transformed into global sensations. As part of the ongoing expansion of the Guardians franchise, manga publisher Kodansha is joining forces with Marvel to release a new manga serial: Guardians of the Galaxy: Galaxy Rush.

Via Anime News Network, Galaxy Rush is directly based upon the first two Guardians of the Galaxy films and follows the team as they enter the titular race. There is actually a connection to Thor: The Dark World, as the Galaxy Rush is held on Hogun the Grim’s home planet Vanaheim. But the Galaxy Rush is not simply a race. In this contest, everything is on the table, and the Guardians will have to literally fight the other racers just to survive the experience.

Kōhei Uchida is the writer and artist of Guardians of the Galaxy: Galaxy Rush, which was also his winning submission for Kodansha’s Marvel manga contest that ran earlier this year in Weekly Shōnen Magazine. The first chapter was released this week on DeNA’s free Manga Box app, and new installments will follow every Wednesday until it is finished.

For now, there aren’t any announced plans to bring Guardians of the Galaxy: Galaxy Rush to the United States or for an English translation. But given Marvel’s track record with manga adaptations from other countries, it seems very likely to make its way to America at some point in the near future.
