GOTHAM’s Mystery Surrounding the Wayne Murders Heats Up

The villains aren’t the only ones unleashing their wrath as the second half of Gotham season two heats up.

Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) has finally learned the name of the man who shot and killed his parents way back in the series premiere, but what he does with that information will set everyone on Gotham on a collision course in “Wrath of the Villains.” Tonight’s episode, “A Dead Man Feels No Cold,” will feature young Bruce taking the first steps down a very surprising path.

“The mystery of the Wayne murders is not over,” Gotham executive producer John Stephens tells Nerdist. “Bruce knows the name of the person who pulled the trigger but seeing as how that person was a professional assassin, the question arises, who paid that person?”

Just because Bruce knows who physically murdered his parents doesn’t mean his search for the truth is over, and it will change him in big ways this season.

“It’s going to be an ongoing mystery as he pushes forward and he starts to understand in a real way what an empty road vengeance is,” Stephens says. “He is going to be looking for other answers and other avenues going forward, which will lead him to really interesting places. It will impact all of our characters, Bruce and Alfred [Sean Pertwee] and Gordon [Ben McKenzie] especially.”

But Bruce’s story isn’t the only arc gaining speed in tonight’s action-packed episode. “A Dead Man Feels No Cold.” By the end of the midseason premiere, Hugo Strange (B.D. Wong) had taken interest in Victor Fries/Mr. Freeze’s (Nathan Darrow) exploits.

“Those two stories will end up being the fulcrum for the end of the season,” Stephens says. “Hugo Strange and Victor Fries, imagine they’re two DNA strands. They’re going to come together and they’re going to spark towards the end of the season, around episode 18. That will actually be the kickoff for the endgame of the season. And that will even kick us into next year. It’s all plotted out already.”

And now that Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) landed himself in Arkham by the end of last week’s episode—at the mercy of Dr. Strange himself—expect the former King of Gotham to be affected by his time in Arkham.

“You’re going to se a whole new Oswald Cobblepot,” Stephens says. “This is an Oswald Cobblepot that we have not seen at all, up to this point, that I think is going to be a surprise to everybody, including himself. I can’t tell you much more than that, but it’s very ominous, isn’t it?”

And speaking of Hugo Strange, down in Indian Hill, there seemed to be a woman in a tube that looked suspiciously like Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith). Since it has already been anounced that Smith is coming back this season for a multi-episode arc, should fans assume we’ll see her return in Hugo’s lab?

“Possibly,” Stephens says with a laughs. “Yeah, I think a lot of surprises will end up coming out of Indian Hill. People who we thought were taking a long dirt nap will actually come back to life and we’ll see them again through Indian Hill.”

Meanwhile, Tabitha (Jessica Lucas) is still out there in Gotham now that her brother is dead and she’s on her own for the first time ever.

“Tabitha gets bored very easily,” Stephens says with a laugh. “She’s always looking for something exciting, so she’s come back to Gotham to help take over the gangs, literally just to have something to do for a while. She’s partnered with Butch [Drew Powell], and they’re going to running the underworld together for a while. They make a hilarious duo. Love blooms in all sorts of places.”
