GOLDENEYE 64 Gets a Fan-Made Graphics Update

Nearly two decades ago, GoldenEye 007 on the Nintendo 64 revolutionized first-person shooters on consoles and quickly became the high watermark for licensed games. Rare’s seminal James Bond video game greatly influenced the shooters that came after it, and remained a go-to source of entertainment for years. That said, its graphics have come to look sadly dated by modern standards.

In an effort to change this, 3D video game artist Jude Wilson has taken it upon himself to recreate the “Facility” level of GoldenEye 007 in Unreal Engine 4. While Wilson’s creation isn’t playable and doesn’t feature Bond himself, it’s still a breathtaking look at what a modern remake of GoldenEye 007 could be.

“I have recreated a small piece from the level ‘Facility’, to go towards my portfolio as an environment artist,” Wilson said on his YouTube page. “I have combined the N64’s original layout with the film’s look and feel using Unreal Engine 4. I have tried to get it as realistic as possible, using the films interiors, props and lighting but, remaining true to the original game at the same time.”

Wilson also noted that GoldenEye 007 is one of his all-time favorite games, and he added that “all the artwork and everything you see has been made by myself and all from scratch.”

There was actually a remake of GoldenEye 007 for the Wii in 2010, which updated the plot and put Daniel Craig’s Bond in the lead instead of Pierce Brosnan’s Bond. Microsoft has reportedly tried several times to get the rights to make its own remake of GoldenEye 007, but nothing has come of its previous attempts.
