GLADIATOR Actress Cast as Queen Hippolyta in WONDER WOMAN

Despite rumors that the former Princess Buttercup would step up to playing a queen, it looks like actress Robin Wright won’t be playing Diana’s mother in the upcoming Wonder Woman solo movie starring Gal Gadot. Instead, the part of Queen Hippolyta of the Amazons will be played by Connie Nielsen, the Danish actress best known for playing a Roman queen in Gladiator. Nielsen was the lead character in the second season of the Fox TV series The Following, and has also appeared in films such as The Devil’s Advocate and Nymphomaniac.

Robin Wright is still in the film, which leads many to wonder who she’ll be playing now that the part of Hippolyta is off the table. Wright’s daughter recently described her mother as playing a “superhero” in the upcoming movie, although that could just mean it’s a physical part that demands some form of fight training.

Could Wright be another Amazon, like Artemis? Or maybe one of Diana’s patron Goddesses like Athena, Aphrodite, or Hera? There were also rumors that the witch Circe would be one of Wonder Woman’s villains in the movie, so Wright could very well be playing her as well.

Wonder Woman is being directed by Patty Jenkins, and is currently shooting in the UK and Italy. Aside from Gal Gadot, Robin Wright, and the newly cast Connie Nielsen, the cast also includes Chris Pine as Steve Trevor, Danny Huston, David Thewlis, and Ewen Bremner. Unlike the comics, in the new film, Wonder Woman’s origins will be tied to World War I, not World War II. The film currently has a release date of June 23, 2017.
