George R.R. Martin is at Peace with GAME OF THRONES TV Series Ending First

Nearly twenty years ago, George R.R. Martin released A Game of Thrones, the first novel in his seven book A Song of Ice and Fire series. In 2011, HBO debuted the Game of Thrones the TV series, which has now caught up to the events at the end of Martin’s last novel, A Dance With Dragons. And it seems that, after years of questions about how he’d possibly beat the television series to telling the endgame he has in mind, good ol’ GRRM has come to terms with his story’s inevitable end.

Last week at WorldCon (a.k.a. Sasquan, the 73rd World Science Fiction Convention), Martin was asked about the Game of Thrones TV show ending before his final novels in the series are released. “Anything is possible,” replied Martin. “The show is moving forward like a locomotive, or sometimes a jet locomotive. They’re writing 60-page scripts, I’m writing 1,500-page novels. So who the hell knows?”

Martin added that “There was a period where I was worried about that. Then I said, ‘to hell with that.’ Worrying about it isn’t going to change it one way or another. I still sit down at the typewriter, and I have to write the next scene and the next sentence … I’m just going to tell my story, and they’re telling their story and adapting my books, and we shall see.”

While making his appearance at Sasquan, Martin read from a chapter from The Winds of Winter, the upcoming sixth novel in his A Song of Ice and Fire series. He also noted that the lead character of the chapter, Princess Arianne of Dorne, is not featured in the TV show.

“Don’t ask me when the book is going to be done,” joked Martin. “I’ll ask my minions to lop your head off.”

Game of Thrones Season 6 is expected to premiere in Spring 2016 on HBO. Are you cool with with the TV show ending Martin’s saga before he can? Hatch your dragon eggs and share your opinions below!
