Gareth Edwards to Direct STAR WARS Spinoff for 2016

When last we heard anything regarding the proposed Star Wars spinoffs, a rumored schedule had been released of what topics they would be covering. The fastest approaching was supposedly a 2016 film centered on fan-favorite, Boba Fett. Now, today, official word has come down who the director and writer of that 2016 film will be, though there’s no confirmation on Boba Fett’s plot inclusion.

Straight from Lucas Film themselves, Godzilla director Gareth Edwards will take the reins of the first non-Skywalker centric film in the franchise with a script that will be written by The Book of Eli and Telltale Games The Walking Dead writer, Gary Whitta. The film is set for a December 16, 2016 release.

“Ever since I saw Star Wars I knew exactly what I wanted to do for the rest of my life – join the Rebel Alliance! I could not be more excited and honored to go on this mission with Lucasfilm,” said Edwards, with Whitta adding, “From the moment I first saw the original movie as a wide-eyed kid, Star Wars has been the single most profound inspiration to my imagination and to my career as a writer. It is deeply special to me, so to be given the opportunity to contribute to its ongoing legacy, especially in collaboration with a film-maker as talented as Gareth, is literally a dream come true. I’m still pinching myself.”

This is huge news for both men. Edwards is coming off a massive box-office haul with Legendary’s Godzilla, and Whitta was met with massive critical acclaim for his work on the Telltale Games series. They are 100% the right kind of people to take on one of the spinoffs. Now let’s just hope that it’s indeed Boba Fett, because that would be awesome.

What topic do you want to see Edwards and Whitta tackle in their Star Wars film?

  1. Prometheus says:

movie like The Hand of Judgment series by timothy Zahn from Imperial Stormtrooper point of view

  2. jessejames36 says:

I’m not sure a Obi-Wan movie based solely on Tatooine would work, but I would like to see McGregor as Ben again.

  3. doodlesdan says:

I’ll take a space pirate film. I want a colorful group rag tag group of Rebel Pirates boarding Imperial freighters blasters a blazing. Space Serpents… Space Rum…
I would also love a gangland film similar to Guy Ritchie’s oeuvre. Some low level thugs find themselves on the wrong side of the huts, the imperials and the rebels at the same time, causing a calamity. Y’know what, Guy Ritchie should direct it too.

  4. M3tsch says:

Boba Fett spin-off? Yes please. Also (although now it never happened due to The Old Republic Era being retconned out of existence) a Mandalorian Wars movie, possibly focusing on a younger Revan. And maybe something along the lines of a clone unit deserting after Order 66 and trying to find their place in the Galaxy

    • Conan says:

Since there is Boba Fett trilogy in expanded universe books, I would like to see that in a movie. Or three movies. 🙂

  5. Films I want as spin-offs…
A 7 Samurai like epic filled with bounty hunters and ex-jedi holding off a hutt run group of thugs and protecting a small colony. They did a version of this for The Clone Wars and it’s my favorite episode to date. Want to update it then put it between eps III and IV and make it Ewan McGregor’s Obi-Wan on Tattooine holding off a hutt gang with some washed up bounty hunters, maybe a clone trooper left over like Fives or Fixer.
An Oceans 11 like heist film like the new book Scoundrels featuring a young Han Solo and Chewbacca.
An espionage thriller featuring a lead who is a member of the imperial spy division, akin to James Bond (inspired by the agent story line of The Old Republic MMO)

and of course… Death Troopers, the R-Rated zombie spin on the Star Wars universe that will NEVER happen.
