GAME OF THRONES Tweets Get the Data Visualization Treatment

If you’re anything like me, you spend your Sunday nights glued to the television, watching the latest episode of Game of Thrones… probably with your phone in hand. Fans of social media and television know that it is virtually impossible to go unspoiled in the hours after an episode airs. But aside from ruining surprises, all those tweets that you’re avoiding can actually tell you quite a bit about the show. Twitter decided to look into this.

As we found via Gizmodo, the platform’s Interactive site is full of interesting information about the show that you’re obsessed with. There are also some really cool other data visualization projects that they are working on, but this one is definitely the most relevant to us. Here’s what it looks like:

When you go to the Game of Thrones Twitter discussion page, you get to pick any episode that’s aired. For the purposes of this, I chose “Mother’s Mercy” from season five. Each episode has a synopsis, and then the graphic that you can see above. Each character that is mentioned on Twitter gets a dot, and the bigger the dot is, the more that character is discussed. You can also see how frequently the characters are tweeted about together by the thickness of the lines that connect them and how they are affiliated to each other by the colors of the dot (see the legend right below the picture). The different clouds represent the different storylines in the given episode.

In addition to this cool static information, you can also see the emojis most frequently tweeted about a character by hovering over a character’s name as well as the frequency they were tweeted with and when they were tweeted about the most throughout the episode.

Twitter also provides a nice breakdown of the top mentions and top pairings that were tweeted about in the sidebar.

You may want to avoid some of these pages if you haven’t seen all the episodes this season, but if you’re caught up on the show, and are as obsessed as we are, Twitter has basically given us a really cool new toy to play with after episodes air. Were your feelings on Dany’s most recent stirring speech the same as your fellow Tweeters? How do you feel about the hottest new fandom pairing and does it line up with the rest of the community?

Would you want to see a data visualization breakdown like this of all your favorite shows or do you think it would get too intense? Tell us in the comments below!
