Adding lightsabers makes most things better. A good steak? The lightsaber can cut and sear it at the same time. Sharknado movies? Added lightsabers in the last sequel, because they know what’s up. Game of Thrones?
Well, Game of Thrones is pretty amazing to begin with, and at least one editor here might kill me if I said otherwise. So while adding lightsabers may not make the Tower of Joy battle from last week better-better, it makes it equally great in a completely new way (embedding is disabled, so follow that link). Especially once you add “Duel of Heroes” from the Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith soundtrack, and it happens to sync up to the scene better than anyone might have imagined. With his Qui-Gon hair and Anakin-like attitude, young Ned does seem a lot like a Jedi on the verge of temptation, and his final blow is reminiscent of both Anakin’s beheading of Dooku, and Kylo Ren’s execution of Lor San Tekka…a thought we presume occurred to Max von Sydow as he watched the action.
Given what we know about Jedi, though, pretty much every character in Game of Thrones would be a Sith by now. Even Arya would have been granted insta-Darth status for using her infiltration powers to revenge-kill; temporary blindness and homelessness were a relatively kind punishment by comparison. Brienne will forever be Captain Phasma, though.
