BEETLEJUICE 2 Reportedly NOT Confirmed by Tim Burton (Update)

Update: Sources have confirmed to Nerdist that this rumor is far from reliable — so don’t believe the hype (yet). Additionally, The Independent received an official comment from Tim Burton’s rep saying that, “Tim did not provide a statement to confirm Beetlejuice 2 as the movie is not in development.”

Earlier: Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! Beetlejuice! If the rumors are true, you can look forward to hearing your friends yell out that name much more frequently than at your once yearly rewatch of the 1988 cult classic film. According to ShowbizSpy.com, Tim Burton has confirmed that a sequel is in the works.

Fans have been clamoring for a sequel to Beetlejuice pretty much from the very beginning, following its release in 1988, but it never really reached more than dream status until the last few years. The rumor mill ramped up significantly in 2015 when star Winona Ryder appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers and teased that the sequel would be happening, but her statement was never confirmed by Warner Bros. or Burton until now.

Burton reportedly told ShowbizSpy, “The film is a go and has been approved by the Warner Bros. team, we have talked with the cast members we wanted for the film and they are all on board, this includes both Winona and Michael [Keaton]. We have the script in hand everything is in place all we need to do now is get ready to start filming.” As the news is just a rumor at present, we have reached out to Warner Bros., Burton’s production company, and the actors’ representatives for official confirmation.

If the above turns out to be legitimate, fans of Burton’s dark and quirky world with reggae-singing ghosts—and the most believable afterlife situation I’ve ever seen in fiction—will be in for a treat. If Warner Bros. confirms, we can start the countdown clock to all the other announcements we’ll be sure to see hitting news in the coming months with more casting announcements, a release date, and all the teases they choose to give us.
