GAME OF THRONES Possible Spin-Off, WESTWORLD Premiere Date, and More TV News

I did a very important thing over the weekend: I watched Stranger Things. If you haven’t seen the new Netflix supernatural mystery show, I highly recommend checking it out. But wait a few more minutes until after you’ve read today’s TV-Cap. We have confirmation on Game of Thrones’ last season and a possible spin-off, a premiere date and details for Westworld, and more.

Leaving a Door Open. Game of Thrones’ showrunners have talked about season eight being the final season, but HBO confirmed the news at the Television Critics Association’s (TCA) summer press tour. After saying when the show will wrap up, President of Programming Casey Bloys also answered a question about a possible spin-off. It’s on the table. Bloys said, “We’ve talked about it; it’s something I’m not opposed to, but of course it has to make sense creatively. I’m not sure that the guys could really wrap their heads around it when they’re just about to start production. … I’m open to it. The guys weren’t opposed to it, but there’s no concrete plans for it at this point.” [Nerdist]

Exorcisms, Etc. The creators and cast of Cinemax’s Outcast attended Comic-Con and made a stop at Camp Conival to talk with Dan. They discuss filming exorcisms, preparing to battle a kid, and more in the above video. [Nerdist]

A Dark Comedy. TBS brought People of Earth to the TCAs and shed some details on the plot of the comedy. It centers on a journalist who starts investigating members of a support group for people who have had alien encounters. Series executive producers Greg Daniels and David Jenkins discussed the themes in depth at TCA, and you can read all about them here at Nerdist.

Highlights. It’s weird to think that Mr. Robot is only in its second season. The smart show feels like it’s been around for a while. But no, USA just brought the series to San Diego Comic-Con for the first time. We were on the press line to ask the cast about the experience so far, and you can hear their answers in the above video. [Nerdist]

An Unforgettable Journey. National Geographic is taking a trip into an imagined future this November with Mars. The scripted docudrama from Ron Howard and Brian Grazer is about the first manned mission to Mars. It features actual scientists among the actors, and you can get an idea of the tone in the above trailer. [Nerdist]

Not So Far Away. Jon Stewart’s coming back to HBO sooner than you might think. His new animated series should be airing by September or October according to HBO’s Bloys. The news was confirmed at the TCAs. Get more details on the format here at Nerdist.

Dressed for Success. You can’t keep the Chanels down. Fox released a tease for season two of Scream Queens, and it shows the ladies are back in action when the series returns on September 20. [Nerdist]

More Superman. We’ve seen the official image of Tyler Hoechlin as Superman on The CW’s Supergirl, but we haven’t seen his red cape in action yet… not officially. Some behind-the-scenes pics and videos showing off more of Hoechlin in character have surfaced on Twitter. You can see the videos at Comic Book Resources.

Some Introductions. HBO’s delivering Westworld to us on October 2. We haven’t learned much about the adaptation of the 1973 film of the same name, but that’s changed. The network dropped all sorts of information at the TCAs, including character details and what to expect. Alicia has the full scoop right this way.

Over the Weekend. Relive some of the TV highlights of the weekend by reading our reviews of the latest episodes of Outcast (Mike says it’s the best installment yet) and Preacher (it’s the season one finale).

If a Game of Thrones spin-off happened, when would you want it to be set? Tell me in the comments.
