FERRIS FEST Twists and Shouts Its Way Into Chicago

I’ve lived in Chicago for six years and I am ashamed to say I have never made it to a Ferris Bueller celebration. It’s absolutely inexcusable that I have missed so much Chicago-based pop culture fun over the years involving such a beloved film. And although it won’t make up for it, I hope that bringing to light the awesomeness of Chicago and Ferris Fest in this article will at least, in part, act as penance for my sins against this great city. I’ll now go and say seven “Super Bowl Shuffles” in prayer. May Ditka’s mustache smile upon us all.

The video above by YouTube channel–and Nerdist Alliance member–Beyond The Marquee is a splendid recreation of the “Twist and Shout” dance number from the 1986 cult classic John Hughes film Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. For those who haven’t seen the film (what’s wrong with you?) or have forgotten (what’s wrong with you?), Ferris charms his way onto a Von Steuben Day Parade float to serenade the crowd by lip syncing Wayne Newton’s “Danke Schoen” and rocking out to The Beatles 1963 hit “Twist And Shout.”

The recreation of the scene in downtown Chicago was put on as the finale of this year’s Ferris Fest – a 3 day event of all things Bueller – in honor of the 30th anniversary of the film. A crowd of about 3000 people gathered to see Ferris, Sloan and Cameron look-alikes perform the scene with bands and dance troupes with an impressive amount of accuracy. Fans from all walks of life showed up with various homages to the movie including a few Abe “The Sausage King of Chicago” Fromans in attendance.

What other films deserve this level of fan-based recreation? Can someone hold me to my promise of going next year? Let’s discuss in the comments below!
