FANTASTIC BEASTS and What to Expect From the Sequels

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the big screen spin off of JK Rowling’s beloved Harry Potter series, opened at the box office this weekend with an impressive $75 million haul. That means there’s no stopping the onslaught of sequels that Warner Bros. promised before the film was even released. So what else might we see as Newt Scamander‘s globe trotting, cryptozoological journeys continue?

For starters, even though Fantastic Beasts spent most of its time establishing new characters and new relationships but a few familiar names were littered throughout the script. Most notably “Lestrange” and “Dumbledore.” No points for guessing that those names will become more important as the series marches forward. But what exactly will there importance be? Well, we now know that Scamander was expelled from Hogwarts when he took the blame for a failed experiment conducted by his former flame Leta Lestrange.

But is it possible that Dumbledore was somehow involved with his expulsion as well?

We think that Lestrange could have been experimenting with Obscures, and Dumbledore knew about it and let it slide because his little sister was (in all likelihood) an Obscures herself. This would explain Newt’s obsession with Obscures and why Dumbledore would fight for him not to be expelled; he feels guilty about the accident as well. So you can expect to see the messy history between these three brought into sharper focus down the line. But what could bring a disgraced student like Scamander back to his old alma mater? Perhaps a familiar fantastic beast roaming the school halls? Rowling has confirmed that the series would take place over the span of 19 years, which would take us all the way to 1945, the year Tom Riddle graduated from Hogwarts. We know from Chamber of Secrets that Riddle was messing with an oversized snake in his final years at school so maybe Scamander returns to wrestle with the basilisk?

Of course those are just a few of the threads we expect to see unravel across this four film franchise. What are you expecting from Fantastic Beasts and did this first film get you excited for more? Let us know in the comments.
