Does SUICIDE SQUAD Live Up to Our Expectations?

The reviews are here and Suicide Squad is… well… you know, we’re gonna talk about it on today’s Nerdist News, so strap in! Everyone who sat through Batman v Superman: Dong of Justin have been chomping at the bit to get a look at the third chapter in the DCEU to see if it would course correct the DC‘s budding cinematic universe. Fans seem a little torn on opinions but there are a definite handful of things everyone agrees on!

Number one on that list is Margot Robbie. Her Harley Quinn is an “electric and exciting” standout in the film, according to Birth Movies Death. She’s also been hailed as the “beating, bananas heart of the film” from Jen Yamato of the Daily Beast, standing out against Will Smith! That’s a pretty high honor considering the fact that reviews are sounding like Smith’s Deadshot is the true lead in the film despite the massive, and did we mention giant, ensemble cast.

Next, the tone has been called, well, let’s say messy. This very well might have a lot to do with the rumored comedic reshoots after last year’s dark and emotional Comic-Con trailer. Rodrigo Perez of The Playlist called the movie a “patchy, makeshift effort of awkward, mismatched tones” and “tacked-on jokes.” But that’s at least a little levity against BvS‘ heavy tones, so at least there’s that!

And then there’s the Joker. Leto had some major clown shoes to fill in the wake of Heath Ledgers‘s Oscar-winning performance, and it looks like he filled them just “fine” according to Slashfilm. Good for him! Against Heath Ledger, fine is maybe the best praise you can get.

But what do you guys think? Are these reviews getting you more psyched for Suicide Squad? Are you rushing theaters this Thursday night to catch the flick? How many more pets will Jared Leto try to mail to his co-stars between now and the next DC film? Let’s discuss!

Today marks the release of It’s All Fun and Games, the first Nerdist novel to be published in conjunction with our pals at Inkshares. From Nerdist and Inkshares contest winner Dave Barrett, It’s All Fun and Games centers around six high school friends who spend their weekends filled with imaginary wizardry, mystical creatures, and intense battles with their LARP group. But not long after a new quest begins the friends discover that something has gone terribly wrong. The fantasy world they’ve built has transformed, and the battle they’re in the midst of is no longer make-believe.

In honor of the book’s release, we’re giving away five copies on today’s Nerdist News. Just click here to tweet and enter to win. Or, you can pick up the book today on Amazon or at Barnes & Noble, Books-A-Million, or your favorite independent bookstore!
