DOCTOR WHO’s 13th Regeneration to Be Announced This Sunday

It’s finally happening. After months and months of speculation, the BBC’s longest running series, Doctor Who, will regenerate its face once more and usher in a new era of the travels of the most curious creature in all of time and space. And it’ll happen not at SDCC as many predicted, but instead this Sunday, following the Wimbeldon Men’s Final.

BBC America—its stateside counterpart—announced the news with a curious video tweet on Friday morning:

With the litany of 13s scattered across the planet, its clear that the impact of this choice will be felt worldwide, what with the myriad folks with opinions on who the new two-hearted Timelord could/should/would be. Fans and betting sites alike have gone through what feels like hundreds of names to try and suss out who may be next to man the TARDIS—with many folks sincerely hoping that it won’t, in fact, be a man at the helm at all (even though some doubt they will take that risk).

Because with 12 different white men in the role—and the establishment over the past several seasons of New Who that Timelords can change genders—it is no wonder the world feels primed and ready for a female Doctor at last. Though some longtime fans feel that the dynamic must always be a male Doctor, current showrunner Steven Moffat, to his credit, has spent much of the last season hinting and slowly trying to ready the fans for such a major change. Particularly with the Master, the Doctor’s arch-enemy, turning into a woman named Missy several seasons ago. With such high acclaim for her work on the series as proof it can be done and done well, we feel safe saying it would be hugely surprising (and frankly, disappointing) to see another white man step into the part, at least for this go-around.

But what do you think? Who do you think is slated to be the next Doctor? Let us know in the comments below.
