Matt Groening‘s new Netflix series Disenchantment might take place in a medieval fantasy kingdom, but it definitely has some things in common with the 30th century-set Futuramaâand we’re not just talking about drawing styles and comedic sensibilities. Was a brief, late-season flash in Disenchantment‘s first season just a fun Easter Egg for Futurama fans, or proof that they exist in the same universe? Animation Investigation is on the case!
On this week’s slightly spoilery episode, host Hector Navarro poses the question of whether or not a quick, easy-to-miss appearance from the Professor, Fry, and Bender was a charming little nod to one of Futurama‘s best episodes, “The Late Philip J. Fry,” or if it actually proves that both shows exist in the same universe. And if they do indeed share a fabric of reality, does that mean we now know not only when Disenchantment takes place, but how it will end one day?
The jury might still be out on whether or not both shows truly take place in the same universe, but “The Late Philip J. Fry” is one of Futurama‘s best, most essential episodes, and the idea it now unites the two series is good news, everyone!
What do you think, though? Was this just a great Easter Egg, or did it connect both shows in a real and significant way that we didn’t expect? We’d be disillusioned if you didn’t share your thoughts with us in the comments below.
