Devo’s Gerald Casale Remixes the Dandy Warhols’ “Pope Reverend Jim” (Premiere)

In more than two decades of music making, the Dandy Warhols have elevated themselves to indie rockstar status, epitomizing a canon of neo-psychedelic alt rock and heeding the salient and unabashed pop sensibilities of their namesake. The Portland band’s music has appeared in countless TV spots, inspired the adoration of the late Davie Bowie, and, now, it’s piqued the interest of Devo co-founder and bassist, Gerald Casale.

Today, Nerdist is premiering Casale’s remix of “Pope Reverend Jim”—a track from the Dandy Warhols’ new record, Distortland—much to the excitement of Warhols frontman, Courtney Taylor-Taylor:

“Devo is one of The bands of my life,” he told us. “Very possibly THE band, so working with Gerald on this was a life achievement/bucket lister of mine fer sher. I love it and I play it LOUD.”

The Dandy Warhols have always featured the deadpan vocals, stripped down guitar rock, and playful bounce that are evocative of the Devo brand of new wave. In many ways, The Dandy Warhols are Devo’s millennial analog, so it made sense for Casale to try his hand at a Warhols remix. And, as it turns out, he has deft hands indeed.

On “Pope Reverend Jim (DEVO Gerald V Remix),” Casale thickens the mix, reimagines the guitar, and buries a retro kick that makes the track both more spacious and more danceable. He gives the crux of the piece—Taylor-Taylor’s tranquilizing vocal and the throbbing synthesizer that’s sustained in perpetuity—a decidedly Devo spin, and, in doing so, “Pope Reverend Jim” graduates from rock club to dance hall.
