POWERS Season Two’s New Retro Girl Talks Her Upcoming Journey

When Powers season two premiered, the question on everyone’s mind was, “Who killed Retro Girl?” And while we may only be able to theorize right now, one bit of information we do have is who is going to take over the mantle of Retro Girl in the sophomore outing of Playstation’s comic book series: Calista Seycor, played by Olesya Rulin.

The “Powers”-obsessed Calista will take on a much different path this season, dealing with her abusive father (played by William Mapother) and her decision not to kill him. Following Retro Girl’s (Michelle Forbes) murder, Calista finds herself with a very similar set of powers to the ones that Retro Girl had after absorbing all of Wolfe’s (Eddie Izzard) powers, so it’s only logical that she would decide to become the new Retro Girl.

“Ultimately, Retro Girl represents my childhood and my possibility and my last little spark of innocence,” Rulin told Nerdist while on the Powers set in Atlanta, Georgia. “Now she’s gone, and that was my security blanket. Now I have to be fine on my own; and how do you do that in a world of chaos?”

While inexperienced, Calista is going to find herself on a journey to become the biggest Power of them all this season, and Rulin couldn’t wait to portray that story onscreen.

“I can fly! It’s a cape! It’s so cool,” Rulin says. “I flew from a four-story building the other day on this giant blue screen, and I was like, ‘Mom! I made it!'”

But just because Calista has all these new powers to use, that doesn’t mean that taking on the name and responsibilities of Retro Girl will be a smooth task for the troubled young lady.

“What can she do now? Wolfe ate like 500 people,” Rulin says. “Can I access those powers? What are the repercussions if I do? Can she punch a rock? Does it explode or does it not do anything? Can I lift a car? Am I bullet proof? Wolfe ate so many people, so now we have to backtrack and be like, what did all those people do? That’s the journey that Calista is on. And her source of power isn’t from a clean place, so how does she handle that?”

Coming to terms with her new powers and her new role as Retro Girl won’t be all that Calista deals with this season on Powers. Her decision to not kill her father will leave her forever changed going forward.

“Calista hasn’t seen her father since basically when he left, when she was a kid. So it’s a mixed emotions kind of experience in a sense…yes, she has a lot of resentment and anger, and rightfully so,” she says. “This is the first time she’s confronted him and felt strong enough and capable enough to handle that situation. But at the same time, I think she was a daddy’s girl [and] always wanted to be loved by her father and connect in that way. There’s a sense of disappointment and not just anger. That’s why it boils down to such an eruption, because it is multileveled.”

Rulin also reveals that Powers is going to take a hard look at what it means to be a celebrity.

“That’s why I love our show,” Rulin says. “Our show is very intelligent. It does touch on celebrity and what does it mean to have a power and [asks], ‘What should you do with it?’ Even if you have good intentions and do charity, it’s still in the machine of publicity and someone is still making money off of it. I’m used to that world so it’s kind of fun to see it written and played out.”
