Denis Villeneuve Tells Us About BLADE RUNNER 2049’s Visual Identity

Thirty five years ago, Ridley Scott‘s Blade Runner set the tone for Hollywood’s vision of the future and it has proven to be one of the most influential sci-fi movies of all time. Later this year, director Denis Villeneuve‘s Blade Runner 2049 will take us back into that world with Ryan Gosling‘s new lead character, LAPD Officer K and Harrison Ford reprising as Rick Deckard from the original film. We recently caught up with Villeneuve and he was eager to share his thoughts on the sequel and its relationship with the first movie.

As seen in the recently released trailer, Blade Runner 2049 seems to take the look of the original and expand upon it. It’s clearly based on the same aesthetic while also carving out its own unique visual signatures. Villeneuve told us that was a very deliberate choice on his part, and he also told us about his desire to hide the entire film until its premiere. In other words, he’s not a big fan of movie trailers spoiling the best surprises. Hopefully that means he’s got a few shocking moments in store for us in the film!

Villeneuve was an inspired choice to fill the director’s chair for Blade Runner 2049. Villeneuve’s work on Arrival demonstrated that he can handle mature sci-fi themes without resorting to spectacle or big explosions throughout the film. But what really has excited about this movie are  Villeneuve’s earlier films like Prisoners and Sicario, which had wonderfully drawn characters and incredible tension. He clearly knows how to make a thriller, and that is the perfect approach to take with the long-awaited Blade Runner sequel. It looks like everything we’ve ever wanted from a sequel and more.

Blade Runner 2049 will hit theaters on October 6th of this year.
