BLADE RUNNER 2049 Looks More Ominous Than an Origami Unicorn

Editor’s Note: Please be advised there are spoilers for the original Blade Runner film in this post. You’ve been warned!

Forget Carmen Sandiego, the real missing persons mystery of our time isn’t that of the jetsetting lady with the red hat and jacket—it’s Rick Deckard, the Replicant-killing super assassin-gone-good from the original Blade Runner film. At least, that’s what seems to be posited in the new trailer for the Ridley Scott-directed sequel, Blade Runner 2049.

Returning to the world set up by the original film—based on Philip K. Dick’s 1968 novel, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?—only way, way worse off (global warming is real, y’all!), Blade Runner 2049 focuses on a new officer, K (Ryan Gosling), who’s on the hunt for the infamous Rick Deckard (Harrison Ford) 30 years after the once-great blade runner went missing. But why has he gone missing? (IS IT BECAUSE HE’S A REPLICANT? Because duh he’s TOTALLY a Replicant you guys.) And what information has Officer K unearthed that’s forced him to go looking for Mr. Nighttime?

Something big, it seems, as the official synopsis for the film posits that K has discovered “a long-buried secret that has the potential to plunge what’s left of society into chaos.” Wonder if it has anything to do with the creepy goo-fest Jared Leto’s getting in on in the trailer. Whatever the case, it all feels just ominous and anxiety-inducing enough for its October 6, 2017 release date.
