Deliciously Patriotic Captain America Cookies

Memorial Day is a time to remember those who served in the country’s armed forces, an annual day of remembrance to spend with family and friends. When you’re celebrating Memorial Day at your weekend BBQ, take along a few cookies that embody Marvel’s own patriot and leader of the Avengers, Captain America!

These man-out-of-time cookies are made out of two colors of cookie dough and represented by his old school Star-Spangled Man helmet, wings and all. Mmm, tastes like freedom.

Captain America Cookies recipe-05242015

Captain America Cookies
(makes 24)
ingredients:
-3 cups all-purpose flour
-1/2 teaspoon baking powder
-pinch of salt
-1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter
-1 cup sugar
-1 egg
-1 teaspoon vanilla
-blue food gel dye

you’ll also need:
-white icing
-black icing

In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.

In the bowl of an electric mixer, cream the butter and sugar.

Add the egg and vanilla to the butter mixture.

Slowly add the flour mixture until just combined.

Separate the dough into two. Knead the plain dough a few times, then wrap in plastic wrap and chill in the fridge.

With the second half of the dough add a few drop of blue food gel dye mix on medium high until the color is completely mixed in.

Wrap the dough in plastic wrap and chill in the fridge.

When you are ready to bake, preheat the oven to 350 degrees and prep baking sheets with silpats or parchment.

Roll out the blue dough to ⅜” thick. Use a Captain America cookie cutter* to cut out the shapes, then take a small knife and run it around Cap’s mask outline, separating the cookie into two pieces.

Roll out the plain vanilla dough to ⅜” and cutting along the same area, place the bottom half of the face right up to the one cut out previously. It will fit in just like a puzzle piece. These won’t spread much, just enough to interlock the two flavors of cookie.

Move the cookies to the prepped baking sheets and bake for 8-10 minutes depending on your oven. Let cool on a wire rack.

When the cookies are cool, with a #3 tip pipe, add the “A” and the wings on the helmet and the whites of the eyes. With the black icing and a #2 tip, add a black pupil to the center of the eyes. Once the icing is dry, the cookies are ready to serve.

*Captain America cookie cutter is available from Williams-Sonoma, Pottery Barn Kids or amazon.com.
