DEADPOOL Meets GOONIES in Ryan Reynolds’ Birthday Gift to Josh Brolin

2018 is shaping up to be a big comic book movie year for Josh Brolin. In addition to starring in Avengers: Infinity War as intergalactic tyrant Thanos, Brolin is also stepping into the role of Cable in the still officially untitled Deadpool sequel. At least in regard to the latter, Brolin seems to be making fast friends on set.

As today—February 12—is Brolin’s 50th birthday, Deadpool 2 star Ryan Reynolds wasn’t about to let the occasion pass without comment. In a post on his Facebook page, Reynolds posted an illustration of Deadpool painting a portrait of his best frenemy. “Happy Birthday, Bright Eye!” wrote Reynolds. “Painting you like one of my French girls.” But this Titanic joke was hardly the only pop culture reference at play.

This is the second Norman Rockwell painting that Deadpool 2 has spoofed, following the Thanksgiving-themed poster that was based upon Rockwell’s Freedom from Want. The latest piece is a take on Rockwell’s famous Triple Self-Portrait. But this time, the younger version of Brolin painted by Deadpool is none other than Brandon “Brand” Walsh, the character Brolin portrayed in his very first film: The Goonies.

Apparently, this isn’t the only Goonies reference that we can look forward to in Deadpool 2. As noted by The Hollywood Reporter‘s Ryan Parker, the shirt that Deadpool is wearing in last week’s trailer is a match for the one that Chunk wore in The Goonies.

Who wants to start laying bets about whether we’ll see Deadpool pull off the Truffle Shuffle just to make his Chunk reference complete? We’ll find out for sure when Deadpool 2 opens on May 18.
