Daisy Ridley Drops Hints About THE LAST JEDI Surprises

The Last Jedi has kept its cards pretty close to the vest so far, which has left Star Wars fans latching eagerly onto every tidbit that might hint at what we can expect from the next installment in the galaxy far, far away. Few details to reach the public have been as intriguing as the latest insights Daisy Ridley herself shared about the movie. If The Last Jedi surprised her more than The Force Awakens did, as she said Tuesday morning on Good Morning America, that could mean we’re in for a stunning—and possibly devastating—set of twists.

Ridley shared a number of interesting nuggets from the set, like how she’s become much more proficient with a lightsaber, what it was like when Princes William and Harry visited the set, why she’s campaigning to get Judi Dench in Episode IX, and her experiences working with Mark Hamill and Carrie Fisher. But there were two remarks that stood out as potential clues about what to expect from the movie’s conclusion.

“The thing about this film,” Ridley said when asked about the hot topic of Rey possibly turning evil, “The lines are less clear as to good and bad. Rey is trying to find out about herself and about the universe, and those questions don’t entirely fall to the good, nor do they entirely fall to the bad.” That might be the biggest “Gray Jedi” alert we’ve had yet.

Things only got more interesting from there. Considering that The Force Awakens ended with Han Solo being killed by his own son, Ridley’s comment that she “was more surprised with this” movie than with the last one stands out like a big neon warning sign, especially when coupled with how she said “the end of the film is more rich, because if it’s always good the outcome isn’t as important as it might be.”

Ridley also added, “There’s a few storylines that are sort of coming together” in this movie, leading us to imagine much of what happens at the end will revolve around the death of General Leia, likely at the hands of her own son. That would connect Rey, Poe, Kylo, Luke, and just about every major character in a way not even Han’s death did, given that he wasn’t an immediate part of the Resistance.

We’ve known Leia’s death was likely coming ever since the great Carrie Fisher passed away, but that won’t make seeing it any easier. (And hearing Daisy Ridley say that Carrie Fisher “took good care of me” on set won’t help either.)

As for Rey, if those questions she’s looking for answers to–about herself and her place in the universe–include learning she is the daughter of of a Skywalker, and is therefore related to Kylo, it’s no wonder the line between good and bad will be blurred for her.

But what do you make of Daisy Ridley’s comments? Why do you think this movie surprised her more than The Force Awakens? Head into our comments section below to let us know what you think.
