It’s been 60 years since Walt Disney opened the gates at Disneyland. The theme park is marking the special occasion with a Diamond Celebration that includes literally adding sparkle around the park. The anniversary events began on May 22, but when August rolls around, you can take a look into the past and see the evolution of the happiest place on Earth with D23 Expo’s Disneyland: The Exhibit.
If you’re not familiar with D23 Expo, it’s basically a convention for Disney enthusiasts. It covers theme parks, games, art, collecting–basically everything you’d find at a general pop culture convention. Disney brings panels for their upcoming films (yes, that means films for all their companies like Marvel and Lucasfilm), lots of limited merchandise, and exhibits like this. Disneyland: The Exhibit will cover 60 years of history for the park. Much has changed in that time period. Attractions have been removed, added, and transformed since the park first welcomed the public on July 18, 1955.
The 12,000 square foot exhibit will have over 300 items on display. It will include props, costumes, the first ticket to Disneyland (purchased by Roy O. Disney), a prototype vehicle for the Alice in Wonderland attraction, the original Abominable Snowman from the Matterhorn, a pitch book used to entice potential sponsors for Disneyland, and so much more. Some items are being shown by the Walt Disney Archives for the first time. I only have one question: How soon can I get in line to see this exhibit?
D23 Expo takes place on August 14-16. Will you be attending?
