Invite the Super Normal Mark Duplass Back Into Your Home with CREEP 2 Trailer

Shot with that unmistakable Duplassian look where the bones are bare, the budget’s non-existent, and the characters carry almost everything, Creep was one of the best horror movies of 2015. It was inventive specifically because of its limitations, and it featured an unhinged performance from Mark Duplass who was either a nanosecond away from hugging you or clawing your eyes out at any given moment. If you’ve never seen it, Netflix has your back. You owe it to yourself to give it a shot because it’s like Silence of the Lambs and My Dinner with Andre had a baby that grew up trying to outdo Patrick Bateman’s business card selection.

Creep was the writing and directing debut of Patrick Brice, who fit into the low budget mode brilliantly, and further proved he belonged in the outlandish, character-driven world with the hilarious and unsettling The Overnight. Now Brice and Duplass are turning their lonely eyes back to their thoughtful serial killer/documentary filmmaker with Creep 2.

It looks like the basic structure is still there, which would be worrisome if I didn’t trust both Brice and Duplass to have some tricks and surprises up their sleeves. The sequel will feature a video artist played by Appropriate Behavior‘s Desiree Akhavan who creates work focused on lonely men. She sees an opportunity to raise her artistic stakes with a self-proclaimed serial killer (guess who, it’s Duplass’s Josef now using the name Aaron…) and gets in over her head.

That last shot of the trailer where he tries to jump out and scare her is trope-busting magic. If the rest of the movie is that zany, and if it’s as, you know, creepy, as the first, then we’re in for another fantastic ride into the forest. Sweet dreams, Peachfuzz.

Creep 2 hits all digital platforms October 24th.
