Comics Relief: Marvel Cancels Plans for STAR WARS: ROGUE ONE Comic

Welcome to your mid-week edition of Comics Relief! In today’s installment, we lead with another surprise cancellation for one of Marvel’s Star Wars titles. Read on for all the details….

Marvel Pulls The Plug On Announced Rogue One Comics

Considering how well the Star Wars comics are selling at Marvel, this story comes as a bit of a shock. It seems that Marvel’s Rogue One prequel comic has been canceled before it even had a chance to come out. All pre-orders for the book have been canceled by retailers, including those on Amazon, who made their customers aware that all the pre-orders will no longer be fulfilled.

The comic was originally announced at the C2E2 convention in Chicago, and the story was meant to be a 3 issue series, plus a one-shot… although now who knows if it’s ever even coming out. Maybe Disney/Marvel decided fans already knew enough about Rogue One ahead of time after all those book leaks this week. Oops. [Comic Cook]

DC Comics Reveals New Logo

DC Comics begins their big Rebirth next week, and with it comes another all new logo/rebranding for the company. The publisher unveiled the new design this week, which will first appear on a comic book cover with DC’s big Rebirth #1 special next week. This is DC’s third new logo redesign this century — they changed it up in 2005, then again in 2011 for the New 52, and now this year. Apparently, the new logo incorporates aspects of Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman’s individual logos. You can check out the new logo design below:

Valiant Announces Six New Titles

This week at their 2016 summit event, Valiant Comics revealed a handful new titles under the banner “The Future of Valiant.” Joined by the previously announced Faith, the new wave is comprised of two new ongoings (Generation Zero, Harbinger Renegades) as well as four four-issue miniseries (Britannia, Bloodshot U.S.A., Savage, and Divinity III: Stalinverse).

According to Valiant Editor-in-Chief Warren Simons, “For new fans or old, this is a phenomenal time to find out why Valiant has succeeded in building the most acclaimed and accessible line of comics on the shelves.” For the full creative teams for all seven ‘Future of Valiant’ titles, click on the following link: [Newsarama]

New Battlestar Galactica Comics On The Way From Dynamite Entertainment

It’s been a few years since the most recent series went off the air, but now Battlestar Galactica is set to return… to the world of comics anyway. Dynamite Entertainment has announced they are launching an all-new series, written by fan-favorite Cullen Bunn, and illustrated by Alex Sanchez. This series will be set in and inspired by the original BSG series from the ’70s, including new designs that reflect the aesthetic of Ralph McQuarrie, the legendary artist who also designed Star Wars.

Dynamite CEO Nick Barrucci added, “We are lucky to count both Cullen Bunn and Battlestar Galactica as significant parts of the Dynamite family, and excited to see the excellent skills of Alex Sanchez devoted to a project here at Dynamite. What was that old advertisement? ‘Great tastes that go great together?’ That’s exactly what we have here. A superstar writer, an accomplished illustrator, and one of the greatest science fiction franchises of all time! We couldn’t be more excited for this new series!” The new series will launch on August 3rd. [Comic Book]

Sons of Anarchy Prequel Series Coming from BOOM! Studios

Speaking of TV shows getting comic book continuations, FX series Sons of Anarchy is riding its way back into comic shops with a new prequel series at BOOM! Studios called Sons of Anarchy: Redwood Original. The new book will be overseen by series creator Kurt Sutter, and written by Ollie Masters with art from Luca Pizzari.

The story will center on 18-year-old Jax (Charlie Hunnam) as “he leaves high school still trying to come to terms with his dead father’s legacy and the Sons of Anarchy Motorcycle Club as a whole.” This isn’t the first time Sons of Anarchy has had a comic series; before this book, BOOM! released a 25 issue series between the show’s fifth and sixth seasons. Sons of Anarchy: Redwood Original is set for an August 3rd release. [Comic Book Resources]

Celebrate 25 Years of Evil Ernie

90s cult horror comics icon Evil Ernie is back, and just in time to celebrate his 25th Anniversary. The new Dynamite Entertainment series is courtesy of acclaimed writer Justin Jordan (Green Lantern: New Guardians). Ernie returns this summer in an all-new miniseries written by Jordan, featuring artwork by the talented Colton Worley. And apparently, it’s jam-packed with bonus content.

According to Justin Jordan, “The original Evil Ernie series was one of the very first comics I saw that wasn’t about superheroes and wasn’t intended for an all-ages audience, and it changed how I look at comics. So being able to actually write a character who changed my life twenty-odd years ago is actually cooler than I can easily sum up.” Evil Ernie: Godeater debuts in August, and features three variant covers for the first issue.

The Tsum-Tsums Are Coming to Marvel in New Variant Covers

Tsum Tsums, the adorable collectible and stackable stuffed toys from Disney, are coming to the pages of Marvel with their own series, Marvel Tsum Tsum #1, this coming summer. Before that, however, they are taking over a series of variant covers of some twenty Marvel books in the month of August. These variants are coming from well-known names like Ed McGuinness, Sara Pichelli, Chris Samnee and more.

The comics getting the Tsum Tsum cover treatment are the following:  All-New Wolverine #11, All-New, All-Different Avengers #13, Amazing Spider-Man #16 Black Panther #5, Captain America: Steve Rogers #5, Daredevil #10, Deadpool #17, Doctor Strange #11, Extraordinary X-Men #13, Guardians of the Galaxy #11 by J. Scott Campbell, Invincible Iron Man #12, The Mighty Thor #10, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur #10, Ms. Marvel #10, Old Man Logan #10, Power Man and Iron Fist #7, Rocket Raccoon and Groot #8, The Unbelievable Gwenpool #5, Uncanny Avengers #12, and Uncanny Inhumans #13.
