Colorful Pokémon-Themed 2DS Units Coming to Japan

Why does Japan always get the rad looking special edition consoles?

Nintendo and The Pokémon company have announced that special Pokémon-themed 2DS handhelds are coming to Japan on February 27– the same day that Red, Blue, and Yellow (and Green in Japan) will be making their 2/3DS Virtual Console debut. This date not-so-coincidentally marks the 20th anniversary of these games. Yeah, I feel old as well.

As for the hardware, Japan will be getting 4 color schemes that will match each version of the game. What makes them even cooler, though, is that the special handhelds will be clear like the classic Game Boy Colors, which is fitting because the 2DS looks more like the older handheld, as opposed to the clamshell design of the 3DS.

Each package will include the game it corresponds with pre-installed, and a Pokémon sticker home screen theme to boot. Best of all, you will also get a download code for the illusive Mew for newer installments in the series, just in case you’re still missing this powerful dude from your collection. Pokémon fans will definitely want to nab one of these suckers. Even the console packaging is nostalgia-inducing with its classic art.

There is no word on whether these celebratory editions will be making their way to North America, but I hope Nintendo at least considers it. My wallet isn’t going to like me importing 4 of these bad boys. But hey, at least we will be getting the Virtual Console games.

What do you guys think about these handhelds? How should we go about getting Nintendo to bring this to NA? Let us know in the comments below.
