Chiwetel Ejiofor is Baron Mordo in DOCTOR STRANGE

Doctor Strange has discovered his nemesis, and his name is Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Ejiofor had been rumored for Marvel Studios’ upcoming Doctor Strange film. Now, a report has linked Ejiofor to the role of Baron Karl Mordo, one of Doctor Strange’s longtime adversaries.

Ejiofor was Oscar-nominated for his leading role in 12 Years a Slave, and he has previously appeared in Salt, Serenity, Children of Men, and American Gangster, in addition to the upcoming films like Z for Zachariah and The Martian.

Baron Mordo was created by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and Mordo played a key role in Doctor Strange’s comic book origin story. Strange’s hands were severely injured in an accident, and he eventually found the Tibetan mystic known as the Ancient One. After the Ancient One refused to simply cure him, Strange discovered that Baron Mordo was betraying the Ancient One and plotting his demise. Mordo placed a personal curse upon Strange to keep him from warning the Ancient One; which ultimately led Strange to ask the Ancient One to teach him the mystic arts as his newest apprentice.

In the Doctor Strange movie, the title character will be played by Sherlock star Benedict Cumberbatch. Tilda Swinton recently began negotiations to play the Ancient One, in a gender swap for that character.

Intriguingly, the report notes that Baron Mordo won’t necessarily be a villain in this incarnation, and adds that he is “an amalgamation of characters culled from Doctor Strange‘s mythology.” However, the report declines to state which “characters” are being used to inform Mordo’s persona in this film.

Now that three of the primary Doctor Strange roles are in place, it remains to be seen if the supporting characters Clea and Wong will also find their way into this adaptation. Doctor Strange will be directed by Scott Derrickson and it will be released on November 4, 2016.
