CBS Gives Us a 6 Minute Preview of SUPERGIRL

CBS and DC/Warner Bros. have released their first look at this fall’s upcoming Supergirl series from producer Greg Berlanti, starring Glee’s Melissa Benoist as the title hero. The preview is pretty long, clocking in at over six minutes, but it gives you a pretty good idea of what to expect. There’s a lot of CW-style meets The Devil Wears Prada vibe going on in regards to the focus on Kara and her relationship with her boss Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart) and her adoptive sister, but we also see that there’s a ton of action as well, meaning it’s not going to be all Gilmore Girls style sitting on the couch and eating ice-cream.

Like any good Kryptonian worth their “S”, Supergirl will make her debut to the world saving a plane from crashing, and that seems pretty in line with the comics. In fact, there are plenty of comics Easter eggs in the preview, like Jimmy “call me James” Olsen, now played by former True Blood star Mehcad Brooks, marking the first time the character has been played by a non-white actor. Kara’s boss Cat Grant is also a character from the DC Comics, as is the DEO, the Department of Extra-normal Operations. And Superman definitely seems to be a part of the show, even if he’s only referenced and not seen. It’ll be interesting to see how they explain his absence. Long space vacation?

There are some things that are certainly not from the comics though, such as Kara using her Kryptonian name as her civilian identity (instead of Linda Danvers), and having an adoptive sister. But those additions aside, this looks a lot more like the source material than the Jem movie does, that’s for sure.

Supergirl is set to air Monday nights on CBS this fall.
