BlizzCon: eSports Showdowns Made the Weekend

BlizzCon has been absolutely epic thanks to all of the spectacular announcements. But, the eSports competitions took over the Anaheim Convention center this weekend, and we got to witness some amazing match-ups between some of the best players of the world.

We were graced with four championship series in total: StarCraft II, World of Warcraft, HearthStone: Heroes of Warcraft, and Heroes of the Storm. 96 competitors entered the gauntlet for a chance at some glory and prize money ($1.25 million at stake). Our very own Dan Casey was on the floor getting the rundown of all of the action that made this weekend historic in the eSport’s world. Peep the full video above.

Things started off with a StarCraft II showdown for the ages. The finals came down to two South Korean competitors, Protoss player sOs, and Zerg player Life. Both came in with winning pedigrees, but sOs took the W, which also makes him the first two-time StarCraft II champion. History being made was a common thread this weekend.

Next on deck is the World of WarCraft Arena Championship. This one came down to a 3-2 victory for SK Gaming with Skill Capped EU as the challenger. Be afraid of Enhancement Shamans, be very afraid.

Unfortunately, the Hearthstone finale wasn’t at all close. On one end, you had the Swedish player Ostkaka, and on the other corner it was Canadian player Hotform. Despite the talent on display, Ostkaka swept the series, and showed no mercy. It was interesting that these two were the only ones in the pool of competitors to bring a Rogue deck with them. I guess they knew something everyone else didn’t.

Finally, the first ever Heroes of the Storm World Championship went down. Cloud9 steamrolled team Dignitas 3-0, becoming the first champions. Dan got a few words with Cloud9 team leader, Derek “Dunktrain” Arabian, as he described his feeling of euphoria and said that it was cool to now be the first to claim the prize, and become “legend status” as a result of being first.

Alright, folks, that’s it for the awesome competitions. Congratulations to all of the winners and competitors who put it all on the line this weekend. There were many epic battles, but unfortunately not everyone can claim the glory. Make sure to keep it here for all of your BlizzCon coverage. Which champion surprised you the most?
