Did the INFINITY WAR Directors Spoil Thanos’ Fate?

Through the first ten years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Thanos has appeared in just a few cameo scenes ahead of his upcoming turn in Avengers: Infinity War. In the comic book realm, Thanos is one of the all-time great bad guys, and the Russo brothers are determined to enhance his reputation in Infinity War as more than just the biggest Marvel movie villain to date. But on today’s Nerdist News, we’ll be examining whether the Russos have given away Thanos’ ultimate fate.

There are potential spoilers ahead for Infinity War and beyond! You might want to hold on to your Infinity Stones until the appointed time.

Join host and the Shaper of Worlds, Jessica Chobot, as she runs down Joe Russo’s remarks about his plans for Thanos. Via Comic Book Movie, Russo said, “Darth Vader was the preeminent villain of my childhood, and we’re hoping to make a Darth Vader for a new generation. We’re hoping he has that complexity to him, and that he strikes fear into the heart of the audience, but at the same time they go on a journey with him. Frankly, Avengers 3 is his movie.”

Sure, Avengers: Infinity War is his movie, because it kind of had to be. But nobody can co-opt Darth Vader’s place in pop culture in just a single movie. Maybe not even in two movies! We’ve long suspected Thanos will emerge victorious in Infinity War, forcing some time travel or multiverse shenanigans in the fourth film to finally defeat him. Assuming that’s the plan, where can Marvel go from there?

Ah yes…farmer Thanos! This was the fate of Thanos in the ’90s, but only for a short period of time before he was once again drawn back into the quest for the Infinity Gems and other intergalactic villainy. He’s just too good of a villain to kill off or leave on a shelf. That’s why we think that Thanos will not only survive the next two Avengers movies, he’ll be around for future battles as the next phase of the MCU goes cosmic.

What do you think about Thanos’ potential long term role in the MCU? Let’s discuss in the comment section below!
