AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR Co-Director Says Films Will Unite Marvel’s Cinematic Universe

Marvel Studios began teasing its long term plans at the end of The Avengers when Thanos made his first live-action appearance. The upcoming two-part Avengers: Infinity War films will finally deal with the threat of Thanos head-on with anyone who comes out of Captain America: Civil War relatively unscathed.

Joe and Anthony Russo — the directors of Civil War and the next two Avengers sequels — aren’t confirming the long held suspicions that the Guardians of the Galaxy will also appear in Avengers: Infinity War. But the Russo brothers are hinting that everyone will be back to face the MCU’s ultimate threat.

“People will not be disappointed in the amount of characters in the movie,” said Joe Russo. “The concept of Infinity War is that the Marvel Universe unites to battle the greatest threat to the world and universe that you’ve ever seen, and we’re going to honor that concept.”

The Guardians of the Galaxy seem like natural inclusions because two of their members, Gamora and Drax, are directly linked to Thanos himself. One of the features of the deal between Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures was to bring Spider-Man into the MCU, which means that he’s another strong possibility to show up in Infinity War. It’s also likely that heroes new to the MCU like Ant-Man, the Wasp, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, and Black Panther will also be making appearances. And if Marvel wants to start its Inhumans push early, it’s entirely possible that the currently uncast Inhuman royal family could debut in Infinity War as well.

Joe Russo also noted that he and his brother will attempt to bring a sense of “psychological realism” to Infinity War “with the same fervor that we did the earthbound work we’ve been doing.”

Avengers: Infinity War Part I will hit theaters on May 4, 2018; while Avengers: Infinity War Part II will follow on May 3, 2019.
