ARROW: Watch a Canary/Arsenal Stunt Sequence

One of the best parts of this season of the CW’s Arrow has been seeing Laurel Lance (Katie Cassidy) step up in a big way and, without much real training at the beginning, to fill the shoes of the Black Canary. During a stretch of time when Oliver Queen is incapacitated, she joined the remaining Team Arrow members to take out crime, including several patrolling missions with Roy Harper (Colton Haynes), who is now officially called Arsenal, even though they toyed with calling him “Speedy” at one point, because of history. The two work surprisingly well together, but you probably didn’t notice a lot of what made their team-up fights so great, until now.

In another behind-the-scenes stunt video for the show, fight designer James “Bam Bam” Bamford discusses a particular scene, which was very quickly shown in the series, but demonstrates the different levels of the two fighters, as well as how they complement each other. Obviously, Laurel is much more inexperienced and as such doesn’t land hits every time, or gets a stray punch or kick herself, while Roy, who’s been trained by life on the streets and by Oliver himself, holds his own most impressively.

I really love that the series puts out these stunt videos, because the fight sequences and chases on Arrow are legitimately some of the best on television and getting to see how they plotted and previsualised before the actors ever set foot on the set really gives you some insight into something that might otherwise just pass you by.

Arrow, as you well know, airs every Wednesday at 8/7c, and you can read my weekly reviews on Thursdays.
