Arnold Schwarzenegger Talks THE LEGEND OF CONAN and Reuniting with James Cameron

What is best in life? For fans of the 1982 film Conan the Barbarian, the answer has long been “Another Arnold Schwarzenegger-starring sequel!” That cry has grown in volume in recent years, especially since the recent Jason Momoa reboot failed to capture the same sense of epic mythology and wonder that informed John Milius’ fondly-remembered adaptation of Robert E. Howard’s classic fantasy short stories about the sword-slinging warrior. Fortunately, immediately following Friday’s press conference in Beverly Hills for Schwarzenegger’s latest effort, Terminator Genisys (due out on July 1st, we’ll have our coverage up soon) the former California Governor dropped a few words about Universal’s long-planned The Legend of Conan that has once more confident we’ll see the film in our lifetime.

“It turned out really great,” said Schwarzenegger of the script written by World Trade Center scribe Andrea Berloff and overseen by Fast & Furious writer-producer Chris Morgan (a lifelong Conan fan). “It needs some tweakage, but they’ve done an extraordinary job with it, and very thoughtful. So I’m looking forward to working with them on that as soon as this [Terminator Genisys] gets out of the way. Because I’m very focused on one thing at a time, [and] then we do the next thing.”

Schwarzenegger has long wanted to do a third Conan film, which is said to ignore the events of the Grace Jones-starring 1984 sequel Conan the Destroyer. The Legend of Conan will see a much older hero preparing to enter Valhalla as he faces one last threat to his kingdom.

“I was hoping to do another one, and I was hoping that the idea of Conan having been King for a long time and then just [throwing] it all away and [going] into retirement, off into the mountains… That whole idea always appealed to me. Then of course he gets asked back, because of some hideous and unbelievable things that happen in the kingdom. And so that’s when the battle begins again.”

The Governator added that he also hopes to again work with his friend and original Terminator director James Cameron on another film project some day. “Oh yeah. I would love to do something with Jim anytime,” he said.

“Mutual respect,” he explained, is the secret to their longstanding friendship.

“If you think about it, he’s a great environmentalist and he always fights for a better world. It doesn’t matter in which direction we’re talking about. He feels responsible to hand the world over to the next generation in better shape. This is work we’ve done together for a long time, especially when I was Governor. He was very helpful in a lot of areas, environmental and infrastructure issues and so on, stem cell research. We just really have a lot of things in common.”

What do you think? Would you love to see another Schwarzenegger-starring Conan movie? Does Arnold still have what it takes to swing a broadsword or does the idea of an aged Conan leave you cold? And would a fourth pairing with James Cameron (after The Terminator and Terminator 2: Judgement Day, and True Lies) get your blood pumping? Let us know in the comments below!
