Amazon Studios is Developing the GALAXY QUEST TV Series

Back in April, Paramount TV began shopping around a television series adaptation of Galaxy Quest, the cult classic sci-fi comedy film about the cast of very Star Trek-like show who find themselves thrust into a real intergalactic adventure to save a meek alien race from destruction.

Amazon Studios has now reportedly added Galaxy Quest to its development slate. The original Galaxy Quest’s director, Dean Parisot, and writer, Robert Gordon, are both attached to the TV incarnation alongside Breaking Bad veteran Mark Johnson. Gordon is also writing the Galaxy Quest pilot for Amazon. However, the Galaxy Quest creative team is said to still be working on the concept as an ongoing series, which may mean that they haven’t quite figured out how to keep the show going beyond the initial storyline.

The original Galaxy Quest had a stellar cast that included Tim Allen, Sigourney Weaver, Alan Rickman, Tony Shalhoub, Sam Rockwell, Daryl Mitchell, Enrico Colantoni, and Justin Long. Galaxy Quest was also embraced by Star Trek fans as a love letter to all things Trek, including the fans themselves. Surprisingly, there was never a Galaxy Quest sequel film. However, the Galaxy Quest franchise eventually continued with a comic book sequel miniseries published by IDW.

Paramount TV has been very aggressively mining its film library for television series. So far, that initiative has led to Minority Report on Fox, and School of Rock on Nickelodeon both getting series orders. USA recently picked up the adaptation of Shooter for a pilot episode order.

Galaxy Quest fans, who would you cast in the potential series on Amazon? By Grabthar’s Hammer, share your thoughts in the comment section below!
