A Robot in Australia is Waiting in Line for the New iPhone

Things must be getting wacky Down Under, because a robot called Lucy is waiting in line for the latest iPhone 6S. But before you roll your eyes and shake your head, listen to the story: a person (yes, a real person) named Lucy Kelly didn’t want to wait in line for hours to purchase her new iPhone, so she simply outsourced the  job to her robot counterpart. Bet you’re thinking it’s pretty genius now, right?

It turns out that Kelly works for a media company called Atomic 212, and they’ve built several of these robots for their office. For the iPhone mission, the robot arrived bright and early to the flagship Apple Store in Sydney, where she (it?) will wait there overnight in a special tent that comes complete with a phone charger. If all goes to plan, the robot will then purchase the phone without any human interaction.

Meanwhile, Kelly doesn’t have to go through the hassle of waiting, possibly missing out on her iPhone, and getting soaked in the rain. And she can communicate with her alter-ego via a simple iPad app. Did I already say genius?

Kelly says there is no jealousy from those diehard fans who have been waiting in the freezing cold, “Everyone thinks it is pretty cool, they were happy to let a robot go ahead,” she said. Um, I’m jealous Kelly, and I’m on the other side of the world.

Speaking to Mashable Australia, she continued, “We use [robots] for everything, just to show new technology. It is a cool demonstration of what the future of technology will be.”

If you ask me, this news is both incredible and terrifying. Are we really going to use robots for… everything? Yep.
