A New Jeff Buckley Album Featuring Cover Songs is on the Way

Nearly 20 years ago, Jeff Buckley passed away due to an accidental drowning, while singing the chorus of Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love”. At some point prior to this, Buckley recorded a cover version of another Led Zep song, “Night Flight”, but that recording has remained unsurfaced… until now.

It was announced today that a posthumous Jeff Buckley album, You & I, will be released on March 11, 2016, and the tracklist features, alongside a few original songs, covers of tracks originally by The Smiths, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin and others. Buckley built his career on his most famous cover, of Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah”, and these tunes were supposedly recorded after Buckley signed to Columbia Records, to show the producers his influences and what he wanted his debut album, Grace, to sound like.

The website for the album says of the recordings:

Recently discovered in the Sony Music archives, the performances on You and I reveal, in part, the eclectic scope of Jeff Buckley’s extraordinary musical tastes and abilities. The covers on the album include Jeff’s highly personal interpretations of songs by Bob Dylan, Sly & The Family Stone, The Smiths, Led Zeppelin and others. You can also hear the first-ever studio recording of his signature song, “Grace” and “Dream of You and I,” a mysterious and haunting piece which informs the deeply intimate and profoundly personal mood of the album.

The Buckley camp has also shared his recording of Sly & The Family Stone’s “Everyday People”, which is pleasantly stripped down compared to the original, letting Buckley’s idiosyncratic voice shine through on the optimistic-sounding track. If the tune sounds familiar, you might remember when Stephen Colbert and an all-star lineup performed it during the first week of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert not too long ago.

Listen to Buckley’s recording of “Everyday People” below, check out the tracklist of You & I below, and let us know in the comments if you’re as excited as we are about new Jeff Buckley recordings.
