A couple of years ago, Kotobukiya released a brilliant product into the market: Star Wars-themed silicone ice cube trays. They started out with just a few characters, and now the line has expanded to include R2-D2, X-wings, Darth Vader’s head, the Millennium Falcon, and so many more. The trays come in a variety of sizes, too.
But, as I snatched up the trays with glee, one thing became immediately apparent: I just don’t use ice cubes that often. Plus, ice cubes don’t capture all the details in the molds. Don’t worry, though, there are more uses for these trays for both food and crafting. We have a few suggestions for you….
1. Chocolates
The most obvious use for these trays (besides ice cubes) is making Star Wars chocolates. They are perfect for May the 4th celebrations, but really, they’re a lovely treat any day of the week. To make them, simply melt chocolate – not a Hershey’s bar, go to the baking aisle at the grocery store and get Valrhona or Ghirardelli bars – over a double boiler or very carefully in the microwave, pour it into the molds, and let it cool completely in the fridge. You can be as plain or as fancy as you want. I recommend adding a caramel filling.
2. Crayons
Have a bunch of crayon stubs you want to repurpose? You can use the silicone molds (silicone not plastic) to create Star Wars themed crayons. Peel paper off any old crayons you have, break them into chunks, and put the chunks into the silicone trays. Heat up your oven to 250 degrees Farenheit, put the trays on a baking sheet covered with wax paper, and bake them for 15 minutes. Put them in the freezer to cool. Read more details about the process at SkipToMyLou.org, and before you start, be sure to read the silicone tray instructions to make sure it can withstand 250 degrees.
3. Jell-O
Fact: Jell-O becomes infinitely more delicious when it looks like the Millennium Falcon. If you want to make another edible with the silicone trays, Jell-O is ideal, because it can hold all the intricate details. justJENN realized using that making the Jell-O opaque instead of transculent is a great way to make the spaceships stand out. 4. Jewelry
Want to wear Han Solo around your neck? You can make Star Wars pendants from the silicone trays with resin or polymer clay. With resin, you just pour in the resin and let it cure. With polymer clay, you just squish the clay into the mold, pop it out, and bake it according to the manufacturer’s instructions. There are obviously a few more steps involved, but it’s pretty simple and only a handful of supplies are needed for either method. Visit Pinterest for inspiration.
