3M Creates a Golden DeLorean for BACK TO THE FUTURE Day

Sure Marty and Doc are the key characters of Back to the Future, but arguably the DeLorean is the true star of the show. This iconic time-traveling car with space-aged gullwing doors is the most recognizable movie car on the planet, in this timeline or any other.

Back in the day, the DeLorean Motor Company built fewer than 10,000 DeLoreans. Three of those were made gold as a result of a special factory project. To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Back to the Future, 3M decided to create a fourth golden DeLorean gold using their famous 1080 wrap. Pretty heavy.

This isn’t 3M’s first foray into the auto industry; the company has been making automotive products for over 100 years. Over twenty 3M products go into the making of an average automobile. In addition to the gold wrap, the commemorative DeLorean also has a 3M Wheel Weight System for balance, better gas mileage and more even tire wear providing a smoother ride. They’ve also darkened the windows using a 3M automotive window film which allows up to 90% of the light in while rejecting heat and blocking UV rays. But most importantly, plus it looks pretty cool.

3M created a time lapse video to show how it was all done, but then they took it one step further by really getting into the ’80s groove and creating a throwback parody video, reminiscent of those wacky ’80s science videos. Screen wipes, totally tubular beats, and awkward pauses abound — plus they even drop a reference to “new improvements in home recording technology that will allow you to record an entire feature film on only one 3M VHS cassette tape.” Slow clap for 3M, guys.
