12 MONKEYS Season 3 Trailer Takes Us into the Future

Update 4/10/17

We showed you a glimpse of the lost city of Titan in our exclusive reveal of the 12 Monkeys season three poster; now, Syfy (via EW) has shared a trailer for the new season.

In it, we see that the whole show, the whole story, has been about James Cole and Dr. Cassandra Railly all along. Their son is the Witness, the mysterious leader of the Army of the 12 Monkeys and the creator of the devastating plague that has wiped out half of humanity. We also catch a quick tease of the character Christopher Lloyd will be playing, “a charming but deadly cult leader who preys upon others’ tragedies and losses in order to recruit new members in to the apocalyptic cult” — a.k.a. the Pallid man’s father.

More in our original story below:

From H.G. Wells’ The Time Machine to Doctor Who, the Terminator movies, and everything in between, pop culture time travel can be a tricky business. When they get it right, time travel can be not just a fun excuse to jump around in different periods, but also a way to look at your life and humanity. Is everything predetermined? Can you change your own fate? A new take on time travel comes in the surprising package of a reboot: the series adaptation of Terry Gilliam’s cult classic, 12 Monkeys. If you haven’t caught up on Syfy’s mind-bending, thrilling reboot, you are missing out. And ahead of 12 Monkeys‘ season three debut, we have an exclusive look at the new key art for the show.

For those who haven’t watched, you can start from the beginning right here… But essentially it begins with the premise of the original film. In the future, most of the Earth’s population has been wiped out by a deadly plague, and the mysterious culprits are known only as “The Army of the 12 Monkeys.” A man named James Cole (played on the show by Aaron Stanford) travels back in time to try to and locate the original virus before it can be unleashed on the world. His only source of information is a warning from the past, a recording by renowned virologist Dr. Cassandra Railly (Amanda Schull), who eventually joins him on his quest to save humanity.

Throughout the first two seasons, 12 Monkeys goes so much further beyond the movie. The show casts Jennifer Goines as Emily Hampshire, the mental patient (originally played by Brad Pitt) who knows so much more than she’s letting on; it transforms Cassandra’s character into a hardened, badass force to be reckoned with; and it creates an even deeper mythology that spans generations. If you’re a fan of the show, you’ll recognize that the new key art features the symbol of The Witness’ futuristic cult, ancient plague masks, and the city of Titan. We’ve never traveled ahead in time on this show, so we can’t wait to see what showrunner Terry Matalas (who makes his directorial debut with the season three premiere) has up his sleeve.

When the series returns in May, Cole and Cassandra embark upon a “desperate search across time to find the man responsible for the apocalypse – a time traveler who calls himself the Witness. Killing the Witness will save the world, but the journey will come at tremendous personal stakes for the pair.” Plus, along with the incredible supporting cast (including Kirk Acevedo, Barbara Sukowa, and Todd Stashwick), season three will bring aboard genre royalty guest stars like Christopher Lloyd, Battlestar Galactica‘s James Callis, Game of ThronesHannah Waddingham, and Faran Tahir (Iron Man)… So you could say we’re excited.

And if you’re wondering if 12 Monkeys will drop the ball as so many sci-fi series have the potential to do, don’t worry: there is an end date–with answers–in sight. Syfy has not only renewed the show for a fourth and final season, but they’re releasing the third season in its entirety over one weekend, from Friday, May 19 to Sunday, May 21 from 8-11PM ET/PT. The first four episodes will premiere on Friday, with three episodes airing each night on both Saturday and Sunday. As someone who binged the first two seasons in under two weeks, let me tell you: it’s quite the ride.

What do you think is going to happen in the final two seasons of 12 Monkeys? Who do you think will make it out alive? Let us know in the comments below!
