Your Tau Day Serenade

You know how some people, with varying degrees of seriousness, think Pi is “wrong” and Tau (double Pi, or 6.283185307179586…) should be the circle constant? I’m no mathematician, but I do take notice when someone does something like this with it. Here’s Tau to 126 decimal places, according to musician Michael John Blake:

It’s a hit! Okay, maybe not, but that’s what you get if you assign the notes in the major scale to numbers 1 through… aah, the explanation’s in the video. if you like it and/or you’re just really into Tau, you can buy the song here. Blake did this with Pi and ended up in a copyright battle with another composer who claimed the rights to the melody you get from Pi (not Chris or Phirman), but, thus far, nobody’s rushing to claim ownership of Tau.

Oh, and 6.28 means today, June 28th, is Tau Day. If you’ve been hoping for an excuse to play hooky from work or class, maybe that’ll work.

    Happy Birthday, Sarah B

Some love for Avogadro’s Number, which translates to a fun chant for use while eating guacamole and chips. We were taught this drone (which, amusingly, is a violent death threat) by an undocumented Ixcateco shaman who was subsequently deported to Quintana Roo.

In Singapore we had Tau Sar Piah. It’s a small savory biscuit made with mung bean. Much more substantial than pi. Ha

I love this! There are theories that talk about colors of the spectrum being associated with tones, as well. My faith tradition uses Tau as an important symbol, so this really hit home with me. Also, there a lot of stuff in Judaism about letters of the Hebrew alphabet, and numbers, and tones, and colors all corresponding. Thank you so much for sharing this, Chris. It made my day!

It’s also my daughter’s birthday, YAY!

no pastry? Tau is DOUBLE PI. it’s DOUBLE PI DAY! that’s worthy of two pastries 🙂

  7. Sean Samonas says:

Maybe no pastry, but maybe we could all try to figure out a way to tie it in with Taoism?

  8. Tzvi says:

Really beautiful, and I like the idea of Tau Day. But it simply will never be as popular as Pi Day, because it just isn’t a heterograph with a delicious fruit filled confectionery. Invent a Tau Pastry and we are in business.

As a 6/28er, I’ll take this over Happy Birthday any old time.
