You Too Can Build A Lightsaber

It should not surprise you that tiny pipsqueak Rachael desperately wanted her very own lightsaber when she was but a Padawan. Unfortunately, that was in the ’80s and the internet as we know it, with all the fun how-tos and instructions, did not yet exist, so I was pretty much relegated to cardboard tubes and seeing how many times I could hit my brothers with them before I was chased around the house. Don’t get me wrong, cardboard is actually pretty great for honing your fencing skills, but it doesn’t make the cool noises and it doesn’t light up so it’s pretty second fiddle to the real thing.

Kids of today have it so much easier. Below you can see the incredible and amazing “How To Build an LED Lightsaber” infographic from a talented fan in the UK. In it, there are details on the equipment you will need like sandpaper, pliers, and wire cutters, as well as step-by-step instructions to transform some simple PVC pipe and quite a few LED lights to make your lightsaber come alive in your hands. As someone who’s not particularly handy in the building toys department, I also appreciate that the fine creators of this infographic include the instruction to bring a “Can-Do Attitude” to the table when getting ready to build.

This looks pretty doable though, right? Maybe I can whip a few of these up for my nieces before Christmas and have some truly epic Christmas day lightsaber battles as we all go to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens for what I’m sure will be the fifth or sixth time. Will you be using these instructions to make your own? Tell me in the comments below!
