haha! i watched my co-worker walk out of a bar and hop on his bike and peddle off in the middle of a night out with friends. the next day at work he said “sorry i gave ya the ol’ irish goodbye.” i found it to be quite funny.

Actually, it’s not clear whether he was actually named Holmes or Mudgett…the guy knew how to cover his tracks. But the writer and editor Anthony Boucher (real name, William White) reviewed crime fiction for THE NEW YORK TIMES in the ’50s and ’60s as Boucher and at the same time for THE NEW YORK HERALD TRIBUNE as H. H. Holmes…and as the founding co-editor of THE MAGAZINE OF FANTASY AND SCIENCE FICTION, he wrote humorous verse fillers for the magazine as Herman Mudgett. (I believe Boucher was also the first to publish an English translation of Jorge Luis Borges, and he conducted a nationally-syndicated opera radio show from the Pacifica station in Berkeley.) Robert Bloch, who created Norman Bates in writing the novel PSYCHO, also wrote a novel inspired by Holmes at the World’s Fair, AMERICAN GOTHIC, and a long work of nonfiction, about twenty/25 years before Larsen’s DEVIL,

I don’t want to completely blow your mind, but Henry Howard Holmes is the alias of Herman Mudgett, a serial killer from the 1800’s who ran a “castle” in chicago who murdered up to 200 people in his super crazy chicago castle hotel.
