Earlier this week, Marvel revealed that Iceman is getting his own ongoing series next year as part of the “ResurrXion” event, but he won’t be the only original member of the X-Men to go solo. Now, Jean Grey is slated to star in her very first standalone comic book series in her 53-year existence.
Marvel made the announcement on Twitter, with a cover that spliced together several images of Jean from her history, including her time with X-Factor, her stint on the original X-Men team, her first resurrection, and the “teen Jean” who currently resides in the modern Marvel Universe. Of course, the Phoenix force looms over the images as well, since Jean never seems to escape its shadow.
Given that the adult Jean Grey has been dead for 13 years, it seems likely that the teenage Jean Grey currently appearing in Extraordinary X-Men will be the focus of this book. Marvel has passed up a few natural opportunities to resurrect Jean’s adult counterpart, including the Avengers vs. X-Men event which was centered around the return of the Phoenix force. Instead, Marvel opted to bring the original five X-Men to the present as teenagers, where they have remained for the past four years. Since that time, teen Jean has developed a new blend of her telepathic and telekinetic powers while attempting to move past her counterpart’s history with the Phoenix. We expect that to be a recurring theme in this series as well.
The creative team of Jean Grey has yet to be revealed, but the first issue will launch in Spring 2017.
